Congratulations to four recent California Endowment Health Journalism Fellows for being chosen for 2012 AHCJ Awards for their Fellowship project.

2011 National Fellow Kate Long of the Charleston Gazette won first place in the public health category for small media outlets for her mega-series, "The Shape We're In," a 60+ part series about West Virginia's epidemic of chronic diseases linked to obesity.  Kate received a Dennis Hunt Grant for Health Journalism to support her reporting for the ongoing series.

Other winners for their Fellowship projects are  2011 California Fellow Jocelyn Wiener for "Mental Breakdown," for the Center for Health Care Reporting and The Modesto Bee (shared with former fellow Ken Carlson and Lauren Whaley), a second place in the health policy category for small media outlets;  2011 California Fellow Kellie Ann Schmitt for her Fellowship project, "Importing Doctors," for The Bakersfield Californian (shared with Christine Bedell and Kent Kuehl of The Californian), a third place in the health policy category for small media outlets; and 2012 National Fellow Laura Ungar for her Fellowship project, "Drugs Plague Kentucky Infants," for The Courier-Journal, third place in the public health category for large media outlets.

Congratulations also to 2011 National Fellow Emily Ramshaw and her team at the Texas Tribune for taking third place in the health policy category for large media outlets for their project, "The Battle Over Women's Health Care in Texas."
