As I step into my new role as community editor for the Center for Health Journalism Digital, I wanted to introduce myself, and share a bit about my background and vision.

As community editor, I’m charged with continuing the Center’s tradition of fostering engaging and thought-provoking dialogue among our diverse online community of journalists and thought leaders. This means working with all of you not only to showcase the best of your work, but also to provide useful and timely content and resources.

My primary goal: to bring in more voices as contributors and spark a lively conversation.  Here at the Center, we’re happy whenever our content can spark new journalism or inform policy discussion, and within this role I look forward to getting to know the members of our community.

The Center’s membership blog is a space where those in the community can post their orginial content onto the site, in the hopes of gaining a greater audience and generating conversation around a timely issue. We typically accept pieces on relevant health related topics and policy updates. Ideas are always welcome. Additionally we have content-specific sections, such as our Children’s Health Matters, Antidote, and Remaking Health Care blogs.

Members can engage with the community by commenting on featured pieces and emailing the authors, in addition to comments, likes, and shares through our Facebook and Twitter accounts. You can also apply to our California, California Data and National Health Journalism Fellowships, where journalists are paired with senior editors to complete diverse and ambitious health media stories while networking with peers in the field.

A little about myself: my hobbies include writing, hula hooping, playing my ukulele, and doing whatever is necessary to reach 10,000+ steps on my Fitbit. Prior to joining the Center, I served as a media professional at the Institute for Public Strategies, the National Forum for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention, and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. I also write on a freelance basis; my work has appeared in publications such as the OC Weekly, Radiant Health Magazine, Student Health 101, Patch.com, and Wickedlocal.com.

I graduated with a B.A. in Literary Journalism from the University of California, Irvine, and a Masters of Public Health specializing in health communication from Tufts University in Boston.

Happy to be back to sunny California.
