As the first News Director of WWNO, New Orleans Public Radio, I lead a small team of journalists as we build our station's local newsroom. We are committed to rigorous, story-driven, public-minded journalism that covers the most important day-to-day events and provides larger context to help listeners understand the community around them. Reaching the New Orleans and its greater metro area, as well as rural, down-bayou communities, WWNO serves an incredibly diverse listening area. Health challenges of our city include persistent high poverty, gun violence, high incarceration rates, lack of access to fresh foods, one of the highest HIV rates in the nation, and the continued rebuilding and reimagining of health systems since the devastation of Hurricane Katrina and the floods that followed.
