Does Community Design Promote Healthy Living?

Natomas is the largest and, at one time fastest-growing, neighborhood in Sacramento, California.

This master-planned community was designed with healthy living in mind: centrally located shopping, smaller neighborhood schools, ample bike and walking trails, and longterm plans for a public transportion network.

Then the people moved in - thousands and thousands of them.

Fast forward 10 years: Do children walk or bike to school? Do their parents carpool or take public transportation to work? Does a community designed specifically to promote healthy lifestyles actually encourage residents to live as such?

If not, what are the obstacles?
