Awards, Fellowships and Workshops

Social Justice Reporting for a Global America Program, Ford Foundation
From the website: Through the fellowship, U.S.-based journalists gain foreign reporting experience and an opportunity to cover important international social justice issues around the world.
Deadline: February 3rd, 2014
Requirements: Selected journalists attend a week-long orientation at ICFJ’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., from June 1-June 7 2014, where they will fine-tune their reporting projects and will gain new reporting skills to work overseas.

Nieman-Berkman Fellowship for Journalism Innovation, Harvard University
From the website: Nieman Fellowships are awarded to print, broadcast and online reporters, editors, photographers, producers, columnists, filmmakers and cartoonists with at least five years of full-time, professional experience in the news media.
Deadline: January 31st, 2014
Requirements: Applicants must be full-time journalists (including freelancers) with at least five years’ experience. Most, if not all of your samples should have been published or broadast between Jan. 1, 2013 and Jan. 30, 2014.

Investigative Grants, The George Polk Grants for Investigative Reporting
Information: The George Polk Investigative Grants are given to experienced reporters to pursue reporting projects relating to social justice. The intent is to promote public awareness of social problems in immigration, housing, welfare, health, employment and other areas and to promote investigative articles on the Web as well as in print.
Deadline: Rolling
Requirements: An applicant should have a proven track record as an investigative reporter and propose an article on a subject with which he or she is familiar. The program is intended as a resource for a reporter who always has wanted to dig into a particular topic or has developed useful expertise – who knows “where the bodies are buried” – in an area of social importance. Grants will range from $2,500 to $10,000, depending on the duration and complexity of the project.

Call for Proposals on Global Health, Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting
From the website: We are seeking ambitious, enterprise reporting projects on global health and the future of the global development agenda. We are maintaining our ongoing interest in reproductive health, food security, sanitation, and HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. We are also looking for proposals that surface new or neglected issues and perspectives in global health.
Deadline: Rolling
Requirements: Proposals must include a credible plan for broad distribution of the resulting work. Applicants should demonstrate interest from editors or producers working in wide-reaching U.S. or European news media outlets. Letters from editors or producers who have worked with you in the past, and are interested in working with you again, are encouraged.
