Awards, Fellowships and Workshops

Food and Farming Journalism Fellowships, UC Berkeley
From the website: The fellowship, a project of the Knight Center in Science and Environmental Journalism, is supported by a grant from The 11th Hour Project, a program of The Schmidt Family Foundation. Aimed at early and mid career journalists, the Fellowship presents an opportunity to report ambitious long form stories on the full range of subjects under the rubric of food systems: agricultural and nutritional policy, the food industry, food science, technology and culture, rural and urban farming, agriculture and the environment (including climate change), global trade and supply chains, consolidation and securitization of the food system and public health as it relates to food and farming.
Deadline: March 1, 2014
Requirements: Those interested in applying will need to be available the week of June 2-6, 2014 for a 4-day workshop at UC Berkeley with the 2014 cohort of fellows, fellowship director Michael Pollan, guest editors from national publications and managing editor Malia Wollan. Travel, lodging and meals for the meeting will be covered by the fellowship.

Germany Summer Program, RIAS Berlin
From the website: The RIAS journalist exchange offers a two-week program in Germany (with the option of an extension of up to one week for individual research projects and reports) to U.S. journalists, who work in radio, television or online.
Deadline: March 1, 2014
Requirements: Program applicants must be full time broadcast journalists, either staff or freelance hires. While knowledge and familiarity of German is preferred, it is not a requirement. We ask that applicants have a minimum of three years of continued professional journalism experience prior to applying for the program. A limited number of program places is offered to journalism school graduates in broadcasting (M.A. recipients or outstanding B.A. recipient with prior working experience).

Call for Proposals on Global Health, Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting
From the website: We are seeking ambitious, enterprise reporting projects on global health and the future of the global development agenda. We are maintaining our ongoing interest in reproductive health, food security, sanitation, and HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. We are also looking for proposals that surface new or neglected issues and perspectives in global health.
Deadline: Rolling
Requirements: Proposals must include a credible plan for broad distribution of the resulting work. Applicants should demonstrate interest from editors or producers working in wide-reaching U.S. or European news media outlets. Letters from editors or producers who have worked with you in the past, and are interested in working with you again, are encouraged.
