I am a veteran news journalist, who has worked as an editor, reporter, columnist and journalism teacher, in newspapers, magazines and even television and a bit of radio.

I am also the author of the just-published investigative work, "Lockdown High: When the Schoolhouse Becomes a Jailhouse," (May 30, Verso), which explodes the myth of rampant school violence and exposes the harms of zero-tolerance, prison-like security and discipline policies--and the industries and individuals that profit from them.

Health Care Reporting and a Little Murder at the Biltmore

<p>Here we were, a couple dozen reporters from some of the best, sharpest news outlets around the state, veteran journalists with a nose for news and a passion for learning how we could improve, sharpen and expand our skills and knowledge of health care reporting. We convened at the Millenium Biltmore hotel in downtown Los Angeles for an extraordinary three-and-a-half day fellowship experience to talk shop, listen to some of the country's experts in public health and health journalism and form our own network of sorts as professionals on a common mission.</p>

A Healthy Education

<p>A lot more goes on in schools than the three Rs, and a lot more can be discerned about the health and well being of children by using schools as the laboratory through which to investigate a variety of health care issues. As a health reporting fellow, I'll be joining my interest and experience in covering health and education by exploring the convergence of both within schools in the Bay Area, the readership audience for The Bay Citizen, where I work.</p>
